The Kentlake High girls basketball team got off to a slow start Tuesday night.
But the Falcons certainly finished in high-flying fashion, outscoring Tahoma 21-11 in the final eight minutes to knock off the Bears 61-49 in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.
Kentlake’s Morganne Comstock, who has been an unstoppable force during the early season, scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help the Falcons (4-0 in league, 6-0 overall) pull away from the Bears (2-2, 3-3).
“She has been pretty lights-out,” Kentlake coach Scott Simmons said of Comstock. “The thing is, she’s not shooting any more than she did last year. She’s just making a higher percentage.”
Kentlake’s 6-0 start to the season is the team’s best during Simmons’ five years at the helm of the program.
In the first quarter, however, that unbeaten run was in jeopardy as Tahoma took a 16-11 first quarter lead. The Falcons put things together in the second, going on a 17-4 run highlighted by 7 points from Comstock and five more from Riley Butler. Comstock has scored at least 22 points in all six of Kentlake’s games thus far this season.
However, she was hardly alone Tuesday night. In fact, one of the keys to Kentlake’s success so far has been its balanced offensive attack. On Tuesday, that balance included 10 points from Katie Bubsey and nine apiece from Butler and Donneisha Webber. Butler also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Cody Sisco added eight points.
“Record wise, this is exactly what we needed to do,” Simmons said.
The win helped the Falcons keep pace with top-ranked Auburn Riverside, which improved to 4-0 in league play with a 68-28 win over Kentridge.
Katie Buskey led the Bears with 22 points followed by Erin McCaslin (12) and Lauren Hamberg (11).
• Kentwood 78, Thomas Jefferson 51: Kylie Huerta scored 20 points, Liz Mills added 17 and Sanda Milovic chipped in 15, leading the fourth-ranked Conquerors (3-1, 5-1) past the Raiders.
• Auburn Riverside 68, Kentridge 28: The top-ranked Ravens outscored the Chargers 21-6 in the first quarter en route to an easy SPSL North win. Auburn Riverside’s Brooklynn Hinkens led all scorers with 15 points. Megan Merrill led Kentridge with eight points.
SPSL NORTH BOYS BASKETBALL
• Auburn Riverside 93, Kentridge 82: Kentridge’s Gary Bell scored a career-high 55 points, but it wasn’t enough to knock off the Ravens. Ryan Rogers led four Auburn Riverside players in double figures, scoring 28 points.
• Jefferson 65, Kentwood 37: Playing its second game without Josh Smith, the Conquerors couldn’t find any scoring punch in a lopsided loss to the Raiders. Alex Wilson led all Kentwood scorers with 11 points.
• Kentlake 66, Tahoma 63: Mike Salazar scored 16 points and Daniel Landram added 14 as the Falcons knocked off the Bears.
