The Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Tuesday night at the ShoWare Center. The loss ended the T-Birds three-game winning streak.
Seattle goalie Daniel Cotton started in net for the T-Birds against the Wheat Kings of Manitoba, Canada. It was Cotton’s first career start in the Western Hockey League and first start for the T-Birds this season. Cotton (0-1-0-0) made 45 saves on 48 shots in his debut.
The Wheat Kings led the T-Birds 12-11 in shots after a scoreless first period in front of a crowd of 2,784.
Brandon’s Brenden Walker scored the first goal of the game at 6:12 of the second giving the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead. Alessio Bertaggia and Mark Stone had the assists.
Dakota Conroy scored the Wheat Kings second goal at 19:13 of the second period assisted by Eric Roy and Jason Swyripa. Brandon (6-3-01) led 31-15 in shots after two periods of play by outshooting Seattle 15-4 in the second period.
Seattle (3-4-0-0) got on the board at 10:59 of the third period. Brendan Rouse won a face off in the right circle of the Seattle zone to Kyle Verdino who skated behind Cotton and then made a pass up the left boards. The puck went across the center line to Luke Lockhart who carried it into the Brandon zone. Lockhart had a partial breakaway with a Wheat Kings defender closing in on him as he approached Brandon goalie Brandon Anderson. Lockhart beat Anderson through his legs for his first goal of the season.
Darian Dziurzynski scored Brandon’s third goal of the night at 13:38 of the third period assisted by Michael Ferland and Paul Ciarelli.
Bertaggia iced the game for the Wheat Kings when he scored an empty-net goal at 18:04 of the third period.
Ryley Miller had the only assist on Brandon’s fourth goal. Anderson stopped 31 of 32 shots improving his overall record to (3-3-0-0).
Seattle plays the Everett Silvertips Friday, Oct. 21, at the Comcast Arena at 7:35 pm. The T-Birds return home to the ShoWare Center on Sunday, Oct. 23, to face Everett at 5:05 pm.
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2011-12 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
