She has managed to find time for virtually every one of her athletic endeavors.
But deep down, Kelli Suguro’s passion is on the fastpitch diamond. That’s where Kentridge’s do-it-all kid has done the most. It’s the game she hopes to play in college.
For now, however, the Kentridge junior is busy juggling the seasons — volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and now fastpitch this spring and summer. And, of course, there’s that school load to juggle in, though Suguro has that taken care of just fine as she sports an impressive 3.9 grade-point average.
“I just try and find time for everything,” the junior shortstop/pitcher says rather matter-of-factly. “School and sports are basically my entire life.”
And rest assured, the Chargers are plenty happy about that. As the prep fastpitch season began earlier this week, there may not have been a more important player to a single team than Suguro is to the Chargers.
A versatile player who is gifted with both the glove and the bat, Suguro also is consistent enough in the circle to be among the SPSL North Division’s best pitchers. Though she admits pitching isn’t her forte, there isn’t a place on the diamond Suguro wouldn’t play to give her team a boost.
“(Pitching) is not really my favorite, but if the team needs me, I will do it,” Suguro said.
Of course, Suguro did it all last year for the Chargers, especially on offense, where she ranked among the North Division leaders in eight of the 10 categories. Of note were her 18 runs scored (third in the North) and .521 batting average (fifth).
“She’s a quality athlete and definitely has a wealth of natural abilities,” Kentridge coach Julie Taylor said. “She’s solid with the bat and we can always count on her to be on base and score some runs.”
