The Kentridge Chargers girls volleyball team ended its season on a loss at the South Puget Sound League 4A district meet.

After a tense 3-2 match against Gig Harbor last Friday night, the Chargers lost to Kentwood and then Spanaway Lake.

Junior libero Mae Thungc set a school record for digs in a season with 282, surpassing Ariel Wolfe’s set in 2011.

“For the start that we had, I was really proud of how we finished,” said coach Liz Quitiquit. “This is the first time in more than the girls have made it past the first round. The girls kept fighting no matter what.”

In their second game, against Kentwood, The Chargers set up six aces and killed 22 volleys. Melanie Dillon made 13 assists and Chantelle Williams made six kills on 16 attempts.

Against Spanaway Lake, Williams and Michelle Keowla killed nine volleys each, followed by eight kills by Lexi Nguyen. Dillon swooped on 21 assists and Lexi Nguyen picked up 12.

While the team’s performance made Quitiquit proud, she said that consistency is their biggest enemy.

“We have great moments but we just need to string together more of those great moments into match length,” she said.

Next year she’s optimistic for a better finish, bringing back several of her most noted players for a strong senior sendoff.
