It all came together for the Kentridge High football team on Friday night at French Field.
The Chargers woke up on offense and the defense continued to show why it’s one of the area’s best. The end result for the Chargers was a 28-0 South Puget Sound League North Division whooping of Auburn Riverside.
It was Kentridge’s first shutout of the season and inches the Chargers (5-1 in league, 5-2 overall) one step closer to the playoffs. The top three teams from the North advance to the postseason. Kentridge can clinch a playoff berth on Friday at French Field with a win over Kentwood (4-2, 5-2). The Chargers have not beaten the Conquerors since 2002.
Against Auburn Riverside, Kentridge’s offense, which was dormant a week earlier, came alive. Running back Alex Tyson got things started for the Chargers, rushing for a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter, giving Kentridge a 7-0 lead.
Kentridge, however, didn’t find the end zone again until the third quarter, when Tyson scored his second touchdown of the game, this time form six years out, giving the Chargers a 14-0 lead.
Tyson finished the game with 50 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Kentridge’s Jason Didis showed the Chargers can do it on special teams as well, blocking a punt in the fourth quarter for a touchdown.
Justin Dash collected Kentridge’s final score of the night, a 7-yard run.
Kentridge’s final point total is its most since blowing out Jefferson in the second week of the season, 41-7. In its five wins, Kentridge has allowed a total of 39 combined points.
Dylan Zylstra led the Chargers in tackles, collecting 6.5, including one for a loss. Brandon Reiter also enjoyed a solid game, racking up 4.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Kentridge held Auburn Riverside to just 111 yards of total offense.
• Kentlake 21, Tahoma 6: Do-it-all wide receiver Tyler Wright wouldn’t be denied as he scored three touchdowns – two through the air, one on the ground – and kicked all three point-after attempts, leading the Falcons past the Bears in an SPSL North game.
It was Kentlake’s first win over Tahoma since 2003. In addition, the win for Kentlake (3-3 in league, 3-4 overall) helped the Falcons keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Tahoma took the lead in the second quarter on a 25-yard field goal from David Stoecker.
Wright followed with his first touchdown of the game, a 9-yard run that gave Kentlake a 7-3 lead. Stoecker added another 25-yard field goal before the end of the half, cutting Tahoma’s deficit to 7-6.
Then, however, Wright went to work. In the third quarter, Wright pulled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Borgen, giving the Falcons a 14-6 lead. Borgen found Wright again in the fourth, this time with a 5-yard touchdown pass, helping Kentlake ice the 21-6 win.
Wright finished with two catches for 34 yards, but also completed one pass for 30 yards and punted five times for 168 yards. Borgen also delivered some good numbers for the Falcons, completing 7 of 9 passes for 114 yards and the two touchdowns.
Kentlake will travel to Auburn Riverside (2-4, 2-5) for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday night. Tahoma will be at third-ranked Auburn (6-0, 7-0) on Friday.
• Jefferson 52, Kent-Meridian 7: The injury riddled Royals dug themselves and early hole and simply couldn’t find a way to overcome the Raiders (1-6, 1-6). Kent-Meridian, playing without quarterback David Jones, who missed the game with a high ankle sprain, fell behind 15-0 early. B.J. Arceneaux showed off his blazing speed early in the second quarter with an 80-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 15-7.
The Royals (0-6, 0-7), however, couldn’t continue the momentum, yielding 38 unanswered points the rest of the way.
