Kentridge’s Derek Freitag and Kent-Meridian’s Emmanuel Daigbe repeated as state wrestling champions at Mat Classic XXVIII at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday.
Freitag pinned Sunnyside’s Elias Romero in 4 minutes, 44 seconds to take the 113-pound title. Freitag, last year’s 106-pound champion, won all four of his matches over the weekend by fall.
Daigbe defeated Davis’ Christian Reyes 5-1 for the 195-pound championship, capping a 32-0 season. Daigbe went 30-0 in winning the 182-pound title a year ago.
Other Kent wrestlers who placed were: Nathan Hobbs, Kentridge, eighth, 120 pounds; Gerardo Suarez, Kent-Meridian, fifth, 126 pounds; Isaiah Shores, Kentridge, fourth, 160 pounds; Matt Vanbrunt, Kentwood, eighth, 182 pounds; Trenton Harris, Kentwood, fifth, 195 pounds; and Marquise Cards, Kent-Meridian, fourth, 285 pounds.
Lake Stevens claimed the Class 4A team title. Kent-Meridian was 12th and Kentridge finished 13th.
In girls action, Kentwood’s Sara Mozeleski (135 pounds) and Sabrina Perez (155) finished second, and Kent-Meridian’s Xochithl Suarez was third at 125 pounds.
Grandview was the team champion. Kentwood finished 10th.
