Opportunities were in abundance.
The Kentwood High girls soccer team, however, was unable to take advantage Tuesday night at French Field against Kentridge. The Conquerors outshot the Chargers 20-2, but nothing found the back of the net as the two rivals played to a 0-0 South Puget Sound League North Division tie.
“There were a couple chances that I’d have to say if we’re going to be a dangerous, threatening team at the end of the season, we need to learn to put the ball into the back of the net,” said Kentwood coach Aaron Radford. “(Kentridge) played physical, hard.”
The tie dropped Kentwood to 1-0-1 with four points in league play. Kentwood’s victory came in the season opener (2-0) against Federal Way. Kentridge fell to 1-1-1. Kentridge’s lone win also came in the season opener, a 1-0 shutout of Auburn. The on goal, an unassisted score by Jessica Hendricks in the 16th minute, is Kentridge’s lone tally of the season heading into play Thursday night.
KL hot; K-M finds net
There hasn’t been a hotter team in the early soccer season than Kentlake, which picked up its third straight win to open the season on Tuesday, hammering Auburn 6-0. In three games, Kentlake, which missed the playoffs a year ago, has outscored its opponents 16-2. The Falcons entered play on Thursday night at 3-0-0 with nine points, three points ahead of unbeaten Tahoma (2-0).
It’s also worth noting that Kent-Meridian, though 0-3 this season, appears vastly improved from last year, when the Royals were outscored 139-0.
Kent-Meridian ended a scoreless streak of 31 straight games last Thursday in a 6-1 loss to Kentlake. A Royal hadn’t found the net since Sept. 11, 2007. Last week, K-M’s Ashlann Wood went in unassisted for the score, thus ending the program’s scoreless run.
