The Kent Reporter athletes of the week for the week of Jan. 31 are from Kent-Meridian; Farzad Karimi (Sr.) wrestling, Harnur Kaur (Jr.) flag football.
What do you value in your sport or about your team?
Karimi: Something I value is my coaches and my support from my team.
Kaur: I value my teammates and how close we are. They are like my second family.
What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?
Karimi: Always keep going even if you can’t. Be positive whether it is in life or wrestling.
Kaur: I have learned about leadership and communication. Its so important and I feel grateful to have learned these skills.
What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?
Karimi: Something that helps me stay motivated is winning state or winning my matches for my team.
Kaur: When I feel unmotivated I start encouraging others and become even more positive. Honestly, my religion and faith keep me humble and motivated. Praying before games for my team really helps.
Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?
Karimi: No, I don’t have a favorite meal.
Kaur: My favorite pre-game meal is a chicken crunch wrap with no sour cream or tomatoes with a side of large nacho fries and a regular baja blast freeze
What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?
Karimi: Keep going, even if you are struggling.
Kaur: My advice to a teammate that is struggling is I tell them to take it with a grain of salt and to move on to the next play. If they are struggling with something I can help them with, I take my time to teach them how to fix their mistake.
From the sidelines:
Karimi: Farzad was voted by his teammates as ‘Hardest worker in the room’ recently. He works hard and wins matches. Farzad won the Hammerhead Tournament this year and took second at the Gut Check. Farzad has a 27-3 record so far this year.
Kaur: Harnur is a leader on defense and team captain. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she is such a joy to coach. She has tons of flag pulls and helps keep everyone in place on defense. She helps our new plays learn what to do. IT is like having an extra coach on the field.
