Kent Reporter Athletes of the Week: Kentridge

Cody Nguyen and Reyna Zimmerman take this weeks awards for the Chargers.

The Kent Reporter athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 18 are from Kentridge; Cody Nguyen (Jr.) golf, Reyna Zimmerman (Sr.) swim and dive.

What do you value in your sport or about your team?

Zimmerman: What I value most about our team is that everyone is always there for each other. My team has some of my closest friends, and it makes the sport much more enjoyable.

Nguyen: I value my teammates the most because they are the ones that make me play to the top of my game and are the ones most enjoyable to play with.

What have you learned from your sport that you can take with you throughout your life/future?

Zimmerman: Swimming has taught me how to deal with anxiety. Sometimes, I get super in my head before my races, but swimming has taught me how to calm myself down.

Nguyen:I have learned that not everything can be given to you and you must always strive for your best by putting in the work.

What do you do when you aren’t motivated and what helps you stay motivated?

Zimmerman: When I am not motivated, I think about my goals and what times I want to get.

Nguyen:I would talk with my teammates and ask them to motivate me when I am struggling.

Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Zimmerman: My pre-game meal is usually a fruit cup and a Gatorade.

Nguyen:My pre-game meal is most likely a protein bar or candy bar.

What advice would you give to a teammate that is struggling?

Zimmerman: If one of my teammates were struggling, I would tell them to stop thinking about all the bad things that could happen and focus on the good. Swimming is such an anxiety-inducing sport, and it is so easy to focus on the negatives, so it is super important to try to keep a positive mindset.

Nguyen:I would tell a teammate to keep pushing and to not worry about the past and focus towards the future.

From the sidelines:

Zimmerman: Reyna has been an integral part of our team over her last 4 years. She has been a wonderful captain and teammate. This season Reyna has swam several personal bests contributing to the success of the team.

Nguyen: Cody Nguyen has been a leader and great role model for younger golfers on the Kentridge golf team. He lead the Chargers to Co-League Champs this season with a 9-1 record. Last week Cody was the medalist in both matches vs KM Cody has been KRs most consistent golfer all year. He has won the medalist award for low round in 7 of Kentridge’s 10 matches.
