It was a missed catch here, a pop fly there, and the errors added up. The Kentridge High School baseball team took a 7-3 loss in its opening district playoff game Tuesday against the Battle Ground Tigers.
Several mistakes at crucial points in the game allowed Battle Ground to pick up easy runs and put the pressure on Kentridge. The Chargers banged out several hits, but all the runners were eliminated by pop flies or double plays.
Joe Wainhouse blasted a solo home run to lead the Chargers. He has nine homers this season. Taylor Poffenroth scored twice. Pitcher Sam Dacus took the loss. He gave up six runs (just two earned) in six innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Coach John Flanigan said that despite the five errors he felt his team would be ready to tackle Olympia in the second district game Wednesday night. Results were unavailable at the Kent Reporter’s press deadline.
The game marked the Chargers second loss in three days since their 12-0 defeat to Rogers, of Puyallup, last Saturday. The Rogers’ game particularly stung, since before getting rained out on May 8, Kentridge led 3-0 and was set up to take the South Puget Sound League title.
Flanigan dismissed the team’s performance, saying that the rainout had given them a mental challenge to come, play, and then end halfway into the game.
“We’re gonna play good teams in the playoffs from here on out, so we gotta make sure we come out ready to go,” Flanigan said after the game.
