Chris Nickerson has high hopes for his senior football season at Kentridge High School and beyond.
The wide receiver and safety, who is one of the team’s captains, wants to lead the Chargers on a deep run in the playoffs, before playing at college and professionally.
Nickerson hasn’t decided where he wants to attend college.
“I want to play out of state,” he said. “I want to see the country.”
He plans to make his senior season memorable.
“I would love to have the triple crown for receiving, lead the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns,” he said.
Nickerson began his football career in fourth grade and played at Meeker Middle School before making Kentridge’s varsity team as a freshman.
He said he enjoys the camaraderie and friendships in football.
“It brings us together. It makes a lot of friends for life. It is going to be hard to leave these guys behind,” he said of his Charger teammates.
The brotherhood on the field helps the team succeed, Nickerson said.
“There’s lot of different personalities on this team, but we always find a way to blend it together,” he said. “We always stay together.”
As a leader, Nickerson helps keep everyone on the same page.
“We, as a team, understand and express the exact same goals,” he said. “We all want to go to the same place, and that’s going to help us out a lot.”
Coach Marty Osborn, in his 26th year at Kentridge, said Nickerson has great work ethic and is very dedicated to his team and sport.
“He is definitely one of our hardest working kids,” Osborn said. “He’s a good vocal leader. He also leads by example.”
The Chargers will rely on Nickerson on offense, defense and in the kicking game this season, Osborn said.
Last season, Kentridge finished last in the South Puget Sound League 4A Northeast Division (1-3, 3-7 record overall). This year, the team looks forward to playing in the newly resurrected North Puget Sound League. The Chargers are one of eight team competing in the NPSL’s 4A Cascade Division.
“We see it as a great new opportunity to go out and create new traditions,” Osborn said.
