Jeff Bernard put Kent into the unlimited hydroplane winner’s circle on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Kent native scored his first career victory, fending off Steve David in the Oh Boy! Oberto to capture the 58th Indiana Governor’s Cup on the Ohio River in Madison, Ind.
Driving the U-5 Formulaboats.com, Bernard surged past David on the second lap of the five-lap final. He kept the lead the rest of the way, although David and the Oberto, the sponsoring company headquartered in Kent, stayed within striking distance.
The boats will be in Seattle for the Chevrolet Cup/Seafair race Aug. 1-3 on Lake Washington.
