Kentwood and Kentlake win state cheer titles

Cheerleaders bring home some hardware in three different categories.

Kentwood and Kentlake cheer squads took home state championships at the WIAA State Cheer Competition at Battle Ground High School Feb. 1-3.

Kentwood was crowned champions in two different events down in Vancouver. Kentwood beat Walla Walla by 13.2 in the 3A/4A Non-Tumbling Small category and beat Hanford at 4A Gae Day Medium by just .4 points.

“Kentwood Cheerleaders did it again – double state titles!

Traditional completely dominated their division, defending their state title on Friday and winning with a 13-point lead over the second place team! The traditional team consisted of: Tara Jaramillo, Alison Tagle, Reesa Peterson, Saira Ranna-Sinh, Melanie Learmonth, Mia Biedzian, Mady Witzman, Cassidy Harris, Ava Bartnes, Makenzie Palmer, Aliyah Saeteurn and Bristol Booth

Gameday competed in a tough division Saturday and sealed the deal, winning their division by less than a point! The gameday team consisted of: Tara Jaramillo, Alison Tagle, Reesa Peterson, Damia Baldwin, Saira Ranna-Sinh, Melanie Learmonth, Gigi Quintana, Mia Biedzian, Mady Witzman, Cassidy Harris, Ava Bartnes, Makenzie Palmer, Aliyah Saeteurn, Mia Almanzor, Lea Demps, Jackie Manzano, Isabell Kilker and Bristol Booth

They aren’t done yet! They will be heading to Anaheim to compete at USA Nationals in 2 weeks where they will tackle 5 total divisions: Traditional, Gameday, Fight song, Band Dance, and Cheer.” said Kentwood Head Coach Rabecca Matthews in a statement to The Reporter.

Kentlake won just one category over Gig Harbor and 3A NPSL rival Auburn Riverside in the 3A Game Day Small event. The Falcons scored 77.6 just beating out the Tides who scored 76.6.

““This is a small but mighty team, who has been able overcome many obstacles throughout the season. They have shown perseverance at every turn. This team is the true definition of teamwork. They believed in themselves, their coaches, and each other and they never gave up! They are so very deserving of this win – it still feels like a dream!” said Head Coach Marci Seger.
