With the retirement of Kentwood High School athletic director Kurt Phelps, a new face will be in charge of the Conquerors’ athletic department: Alanna Vann-Young.
Vann-Young is a former Bishop Blanchet High School head coach and science teacher. She has also taught at Illahee Middle School and Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way.
Education-wise, Vann-Young got her bachelor’s degree in health and performance from the University of Montana, where she was also on the track team. Vann-Young then went and got her master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership at the University of Washington.
Her mission is to “influence educational and athletic opportunities for student-athletes by developing an environment that inspires and empowers student-athletes to be champions in academics, competition and life,” she told the Kent School District.
“We’re excited to have her energy and expertise leading Kentwood athletics into the future,” the Kent School District said in a statement to the Kent Reporter.
