The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Victoria Royals 4-3 in a shootout Friday night at the Save-On-Foods Center in Victoria, B.C.
The Royals elected to shoot first in the shootout. Kevin Sundher was up first for the Royals and Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped him with a pad save. Branden Troock was the T-Birds first shooter and he had Victoria goalie Keith Hamilton beat but the puck rolled off his stick.
Robin Soudek was the second shooter for Victoria and he was able to convert with a quick shot over Pickard’s glove to give the Royals a 1-0 lead in the shootout. The T-Birds sent out Burke Gallimore as their second shooter. Gallimore came down on Hamilton and at the hash marks between the circles beat Hamilton with a hard snap shot over the glove.
Jamie Crooks was the third shooter for Victoria. Pickard stopped Crooks attempt at the left post. Marcel Noebels had the chance to win the game for the T-Birds but was denied by Hamilton.
With the shootout tied 1-1 it went to sudden death. Steven Hodges was sent over the boards by the Royals. Pickard made a juggling save and was able to keep the puck out of the net. T-Birds captain Luke Lockhart was the fourth Seattle shooter. He came down on Hamilton and beat the goalie low to get the T-Birds the win.
This was the T-Birds first game this season to go to overtime or a shootout.
The T-Birds and Royals play again Saturday night at Save-On-Foods Centre on Saturday 7:05pm in the second game of a two-game series.
The game was scoreless through the first 40 minutes of action. The third period started with a bang though with the two teams combining for five goals in 6:37.
Victoria (8-7-0-1) took a 1-0 lead 23 seconds into the third period on a shorthanded goal by Kevin Sundher.
On the same penalty kill the Royals were able to score a second shorthanded goal. Tim Traber converted on a two-on-one at 1:37 of the third. Mike Forsyth and Jesse Zgraggen had the assists.
The T-Birds came right back when defenseman Brad Deagle scored at 3:22 of the third to get the T-Birds on the board. Deagle’s first goal of the year was unassisted.
Seattle (5-5-0-0) tied the game 2-2 when Connor Sanvido converted on a breakaway at 6:24 of the third. Sanvido came down on Victoria goalie Keith Hamilton and beat him with a shot through the goalie’s legs. Chance Lund and Deagle had the assists on Sanvido’s first goal of the season.
Burke Gallimore gave the T-Birds a 3-2 lead 13 seconds after Sanvido’s goal. Marcel Noebels took a shot that Hamilton stopped but Gallimore was able to get the rebound and beat the netminder for his fifth goal of the year.
The Royals pulled Hamilton for an extra attacker with two minutes left in the game. It paid off as Sundher tied the game at 18:35 when he snapped a rebound past Pickard.
Victoria outshot Seattle 36-30 through three periods.
The T-Birds outshot the Royals 2-1 in overtime.
Pickard stopped 34 of 37 shots and improved his record to 5-4-0-0.
Hamilton made 29 saves on 32 shots and his record is now 7-5-0-1.
