Veteran forward Alex Megson has signed with the Tacoma Stars indoor soccer team for the 2016-17 season, continuing a family legacy laid by his father.
Neil Megson is a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) legend who played for the Stars from 1983-92.
“Alex is a hometown boy with the ability to score goals in the MASL (Major Arena Soccer League),” Darren Sawatzky, Stars coach and general
manager, said in a media release. “We have built a team of local guys with ties that represent Tacoma, Kent, and the rest of our great state. I expect Alex to hit the ground running and smash home some goals for us.”
Alex Megson began his indoor playing career in 2010, playing for the Chicago Riot in the MISL. He scored nine goals, 20 points, and was named that year to the 2010-11 All MISL Rookie Team. In 2011-2012 he joined the Syracuse Silver Knights where he scored nine more goals and 23 points. After a bounce back to the
Riot for another season in which he helped the Soul qualify for the playoffs, Megson joined Stars goalkeeper, Danny Waltman on the 2014 MISL Champion Missouri Comets for a season in which he scored 17 points.
“He’s a great player, great guy, and Tacoma born and raised,” Stars Goalkeeper Danny Waltman said. “He grew up going to Stars games, and when I met him he was a little baby being held by his mom. He’s played for a few high level organizations, and we had an awesome time playing together in Missouri. We had chemistry, and I think he will help bring some of that here. He knows the game and knows what it means to be a Tacoma Star.”
Following a split season stint in 2014/15 with the Dallas Sidekicks and Rochester Lancers, Megson spent last season with the Cedar Rapids Rampage, where he posted a stellar 16 goals and 25 points. His successful season stretched beyond the end of the regular season and culminated in an invite from coach Keith Tozer to join the U.S. National Futsal Team this past summer in Buenos Aires.
“I have known Alex since he was a young man, where would play and referee at the Tacoma Soccer Center as much as he could” Stars Owner Lane Smith said. “He’s gone on to have a great professional career playing on championship teams, and I’m sure his father will agree it will be great to have Alex back home and in a Tacoma Stars jersey.”
The Stars take on Soles De Sonora for the season opener on Saturday, Oct. 29, at ShoWare Center in Kent.
