Sixty-eight teams compete at four locations in King County this weekend in the NW Lady Sharks Mike Richdale Memorial fastpitch softball tournament.
The tournament is being played at Petrovitsky Park in Renton, Steven J. Underwood Park in Des Moines, South King County Ballfields in Federal Way and Service Club in Kent.
The teams will compete in pool play divided into age divisions 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U on Saturday and then single-elimination bracket play on Sunday.
It is considered the largest ASA (amateur softball association) fall tournament in the state.
The tournament, presented by title sponsor, King Electrical Manufacturing Company, carries the name of founder Mike Richdale, who started the Lady Shark fastpitch organization in San Jose, Calif., in 1992. After success in California, Richdale moved to Kirkland and began the NW Lady Sharks. After a long, courageous battle with brain cancer, Richdale passed away in his sleep on Dec. 6, 2007.
The tournament is held annually by the NW Lady Sharks (www.nwladysharks.org) program in his memory.
