Pacific University outside hitter Una Areta, a Kent-Meridian alumnus, has earned the freshman selection as the Northwest Conference’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week.
The award, selected by the conference’s sports information directors, was announced on Monday night.
Areta paced Pacific to two wins last weekend, allowing the Boxers to improve to 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference. She finished the weekend with 37 kills, 27 digs, four blocks and three assists in the two matches.
“I am excited for Una and our volleyball program for the recognition by the Northwest Conference,” said Pacific coach Kip Yoshimura. “She has developed into an outstanding attacker, defender and serve-receive player. I look forward to watching her develop and improve the rest of this fall and beyond.”
Areta compiled her first collegiate double-double in Friday’s five-set victory at Willamette. She finished with 24 kills and 19 digs to go along with three assists and two blocks. She was just as potent in the Boxers’ three-set sweep at Linfield on Saturday, finishing with 13 kill, eight digs and two blocks.
After coming off the bench for the first 10 matches of the season, Areta was pressed into starting service after second-team All-NWC outside hitter Marie Rewick to a season-ending knee injury. In her three starts, Areta has come up with 46 kills for an average of 4.18 kills per set. She enters the week ranked 10th in the NWC with 135 kills and an average of 2.81 kills per set.
Pacific will close out the first half of their NWC schedule this weekend. The Boxers host Lewis & Clark at the Stoller Center on Friday and travel to No. 19 Puget Sound on Saturday.
