The Seattle Women’s Golf Association City Championship will be returning to Kent from June 14-18 for the first time since 1997.
The five-day tournament, which opens on June 14 with a qualifying round and concludes on June 18 with match play, will be held at Meridian Valley Country Club and include 96 of the state’s top female golfers.
Kent’s Kathleen Walker is hoping to gain some home-field advantage for the week-long event. Walker, who won Meridian Valley’s club championship in August, is one of a handful of locals expected to challenge for the title.
“The girls who are in the tournament and who are from Meridian — and there are quite a few of us — I think we have a really good advantage,” said Walker. “I’m really excited about it. I think it’s going to be a fun tournament.”
Walker, 47, didn’t compete in the City Championship the last time it came to Kent, but has since gained a greater feel for the game and hopes for a solid outcome this time around.
“I was a 35 handicap back then and I wasn’t a great golfer,” she said. “I really didn’t understand what it was all about.”
This time around?
Keep it simple and have a goal.
“My first goal is to get into the championship flight,” she said. “To be one of the 16 elite.”
Leslie Folsom edged Sue Ursino 7-and-5 for last year’s City Championship, which was played at The Seattle Golf Club. It was Folsom’s third win in the last four years.
THE SWGA has been around since 1927. Its membership is comprised of 13 private clubs in King County — Meridian Valley, Sahalee, Fairwood, Twin Lakes, Seattle, Pleateau, Bear Creek, Inglewood, Glendale, Glen Acres, Overlake, Sand Point and Rainier.
