Stakes season to heat up; wiener dogs go to the post | Emerald Downs

In terms of stakes races at Emerald Downs, this week represents the calm before the storm.

That changes next week with four stakes on Sunday, July 16, including the $50,000 Mt. Rainier Stakes for older horses and the $50,000 Boeing Stakes for older fillies and mares.

There is no shortage of activities this weekend, however, beginning Friday with Brewers Night, continuing Saturday with Breakfast at the Wire (see below) and Ladies Night, and concluding Sunday with the annual Wiener Dog & Wiener Wannabe Races.

In fact, a record nine Wiener Dog Races will be run this year-two heats after Races 3, 4, 5 and 6, with the finals in both the Wiener Dog and Wiener Wannabes after Race 7.

First post is 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Saturday night racing continues through Saturday, July 28.

Claiming game going strong

Claiming activity remains hot and heavy at Emerald Downs in 2017, with 137 horses red-tagged for an aggregate $952,500 through Monday. That averages out to 3.51 claims per day, or an average of one claim almost every two races.

Hit the Beach, a 4-year-old Harbor the Gold gelding, and Distinguishable, a 4-year-old Distorted Humor filly, each were claimed for a meet-high $25,000 while Keller’s Gold, a 4-year-old Liberty Gold gelding was claimed for $20,000.

Through the same date in 2016, there were 117 horses claimed for an aggregate $731,500.

Breakfast at the wire begins Saturday

Breakfast at the Wire – where fans can enjoy a leisurely breakfast while watching Thoroughbreds train – returns for its fourth straight season beginning Saturday with host Dean Mazzuca welcoming special guests John Parker and Candi Tollett.

Sponsored by Toscano’s Italian Grill, Breakfast at the Wire is located adjacent to the finish line and next to Trackside Deli – the perfect vantage point to enjoy breakfast while viewing Thoroughbreds currently racing and training at Emerald Downs.

Breakfast at the Wire runs 8 to 10 a.m. every Saturday through Aug. 26, with entry via the Paddock Gate. The $6 price includes free parking, entry to the track and a breakfast choice of scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns, or scrambled eggs with biscuits and gravy along with giant cinnamon rolls and gourmet coffee from Rad Roasting Company.
