Thunderbirds head coach Rob Sumner has been named by Hockey Canada as an assistant coach for Team Canada for the Under-18 World Championships in Belarus from April 13 to April 23.
Sumner will be one of two assistant coaches for Team Canada. The head coach of Team Canada will be former Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy
Carbonneau. The other assistant coach for Team Canada will be George Burnett, the general manager and head coach of the Belleville Bulls from the Ontario Hockey League.
“I am honored that I have been selected to be an assistant coach with Team Canada,” said Sumner. “I am looking forward to working with Guy and George as well as the entire Hockey Canada staff at this tournament.”
Sumner has been the head coach of the T-Birds for the past six seasons. He has a career record of 211-172-17-27 with two ties.
Canada’s coaching staff, along with Al Murray, Hockey Canada’s head scout of men’s national teams, will help select Canada’s roster for the 2010 Under-18 Championship from players whose Canadian Hockey League teams either missed the playoffs or suffered a first-round loss.
The Under-18 World Championship is a 10-team tournament featuring the best hockey players in the world under the age of 18. Team Canada is in Group A with the United States, Switzerland, Sweden and Belarus. Group B is comprised of Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Slovakia and Russia. All games will take place in Minsk and Bobruisk, Belarus.
