Danny Mumaugh made 28 saves Wednesday night to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 2-1 shootout win over the Prince George Cougars at the CN Centre in Prince George, British Columbia.
The T-Birds beat the Cougars 9-7 in a wild game Tuesday night in the first game of their two-game series.
The win moved the T-Birds into fourth place in the Western Conference, five points behind the third-place Victoria Royals. They are three points behind the Portland Winterhawks who lead the U.S. Division and are in second place in the conference.
The T-Birds won the game in the fourth round of the shootout. Prince George goalie Ty Edmonds stopped Roberts Lipsbergs, Shea Theodore and Alexander Delnov. Mumaugh stopped Klarc Wilson, Zach Pochiro, Todd Fiddler and Jordan Tkatch to set up McKechnie’s heroics.
Mumaugh’s record is now 12-8-2-3 after stopping 28 of 29 shots.
McKechnie skated slowly towards Edmonds. He put the puck on his backhand, brought it to his forehand forcing Edmonds down. Then he brought the puck back to his backhanded and lifted it over Edmonds outstretched right leg to get the goal.
Seattle (24-14-2-3) took a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the second period. Theodore passed the puck from the Seattle zone up the ice to Lipsbergs in the neutral zone. Lipsbergs carried the puck into the Cougars’ zone on a two-on-two with Calvin Spencer on his right. Delnov was trailing the play and Lipsbergs found him with a pass. Delnov took a snap shot with Spencer and a Cougars’ defenseman screening Edmonds. Delnov’s shot beat Edmonds over the blocker.
Prince George (16-22-2-4) led 18-15 in shots after two periods.
The Cougars tied the game 1-1 at 12:10 of the third period. Pochiro won a face-off to Fiddler who took a shot on goal. Mumaugh made the save but Wilson go the rebound and put it past the goalie.
Prince George outshot Seattle 9-7 in the third period and led 27-22 in shots after three periods.
The Cougars outshot the T-Birds 29-25 in the game.
Edmonds made 23 saves on 24 shots and his record is now 13-14-1-3.
Coming home
The T-Birds’ next two games are a home-and-home series with the Spokane Chiefs. They host the Chiefs at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the ShoWare Center. They are in Spokane on Tuesday for a 7:05 p.m. game.
