The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 in overtime in a Western Hockey League game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Saturday night.

Seattle (10-8-1-1) took a 4-3 lead at 5:16 of the third period when Alexander True banged in a rebound. Ethan Bear passed the puck from the right point to Jarret Tyszka, who took a wrist shot that rebounded off Portland goalie Cole Kehler and into the crease to True.

Portland (10-12-0-0) tied the game 4-4 on Keegan Iverson’s power-play goal at the seven-minute mark of the third period.

Ryan Hughes scored the game-winning goal in overtime at 2:17 when he beat Seattle goalie Rylan Toth through the legs.

Seattle finished with a 46-27 advantage in shots.

Toth made 22 saves on 27 shots and his record is now 8-8-1-0. Kehler stopped 42 of 46 shots and his record is now 8-7-0-0.

Portland took a 1-0 lead at 14:41 of the first period on a goal from Colton Veloso. Hughes scored with 10 seconds left in the first give the Winterhawks a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

Seattle got on the board at 3:53 of the second period on a power-play goal from Scott Eansor. Mathew Barzal carried the puck from the left wing to the right wing through the top of the slot. Barzal backhanded the puck to Sami Moilanen in the slot. Moilanen took a wrist shot that Eansor tipped past Kehler for his team leading 10th goal of the season.

The T-Birds tie the game 2-2 at 10:25 of the second. Moilanen dug the puck out of the right corner and found Turner Ottenbreit pinching down from the left point with a pass. Ottenbreit beat Kehler high from the left circle for his third goal of the season. Nolan Volcan had the second assists.

Volcan’s great hand-eye coordination on the power play at 15:55 of the second gave the T-Birds a 3-2 lead. True passed the puck out of the left corner to Ottenbreit at the high slot. Ottenbreit took a slap shot that went over Kehler and hit the end boards. The puck came off the end boards right to Volcan to the left of the net. Volcan batted the puck out of the air and past a lunging Kehler.

Portland tied the game 3-3 with 30 seconds left in the second period on a power-play goal from Joachim Blichfeld.

Kings come to Kent

The T-Birds play the Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at the ShoWare Center.
