The Red Deer Rebels defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 in a shootout Tuesday night at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer, Alberta.
The Rebels elected to shoot first in the shootout.
They sent Willie Coetzee up first and he beat Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard with a move at the right post. Jonathan Parker shot first for the T-Birds and as he came down on Rebels goalie Kraymer Barnstable the puck rolled on him and he shot over the net.
Pickard then denied Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the second round of the shootout. Barnstable stopped Prab Rai to send the shootout to the third round.
Nathan Green was the Rebels third shooter and he was stopped by Pickard. Colin Jacobs was the T- Birds third shooter and he needed to score to extend the shootout to sudden death. Jacobs’ snap shot from in close hit Barnstable in the shoulder. The Rebels won the shootout 1-0.
Red Deer (7-8-0-0) took a 1-0 lead at 7:46 of the first period on a goal by Green. Coetzee had the only assist on the goal.
The Rebels went up 2-0 at 18:53 of the first on a four- on-four goal by Aaron Borejko. Nugent-Hopkins assisted on the goal.
Seattle (3-9-0-2) outshot Red Deer 13-12 in the first period.
The T-Birds cut the Rebels’ lead to one at 8:14 of the second period on a goal by Jacobs. Brendan Rouse put a shot on goal that Red Deer Kraymer Barnstable stopped. Jacobs crashed the net and got to the puck to the right of the Rebels goal. Jacobs controlled the puck and then snapped a quick wrist shot past Barnstable high.
Seattle tied the game 2-2 at 13:25 of the second on Lindsay Nielsen’s first goal of the year. Parker sent the puck to Rai who carried it down the left wing. Rai put a shot on goal from the bottom of the left circle. Barnstable made the save at the post but the puck rebounded into the high slot. Nielsen was coming down the slot as Barnstable moved from his right to left to get in position to stop a follow up shot. Nielsen saw Barnstable moving and went the opposite way and beat the goalie with a quick snap shot.
Parker gave the T-Birds a 3-2 lead at 14:35 of the second. Steve Chaffin cleared the puck out of the Seattle zone on the left side of the rink. Parker chased the puck down into the Rebels zone. At the left face-off circle Parker cut into the slot in front of a Rebels defender and put a wrist shot on goal. Parker’s shot beat Barnstable over the blocker for his team leading sixth goal of the year.
Seattle led 25-21 in total shots after two periods by outshooting the Rebels 12-9 in the second period.
Green scored a power-play goal at 18:46 of the third period to tie the game 3-3. Coetzee and Cullen Morin had the assists on the goal.
Red Deer outshot Seattle 20-6 in the third period and led 41-31 in total shots after 60 minutes.
Seattle outshot Red Deer 2-1 in overtime but the Rebels finished with a 44-33 advantage in total shots.
Pickard made 40 saves on 43 shots and his record is now 3-6-0-2.
Barnstable stopped 30 of 33 shots and his record is now 2-1-0-0.
The T-Birds are in Edmonton on Wednesday to face the Oil Kings at 6 p.m. They finish out the current six- game road trip with three games on the weekend. They face the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday at 6:30 p.m., the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and the Kootenay Ice on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Seattle returns home to face the Spokane Chiefs on Friday, November 6, at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
