Lane Pederson had a goal and three assists and Keegan Kolesar had a goal and two assists to help lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Victoria Royals at Comcast Arena in Everett.
The game was the second for both teams at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Classic. The T-Birds play their third game at the Classic at 3 p.m. Sunday against the Spokane Chiefs. The T-Birds beat the Tri-City Americans 4-0 on Friday in Everett.
Ethan Bear scoring the overtime winning goal on assists from Kolesar and Pederson. Pederson gained the Victoria zone and then passed it behind him to Kolesar coming down the right wing. Kolesar put a shot on goal that rebounded right back to him. He carried the puck around the net and centered it to Bear who snapped the puck into the net at 2:20 of overtime.
Seattle opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Justin Hickman at 10:03 of the first period. Pederson curled off the boards into the left circle and took a shot. The puck rebounded off Victoria goalie Evan Smith to Michael Sauer outside the crease. Sauer banged the puck off the right post and it lay behind Smith. Hickman reached and poked the puck across the line for the goal.
Victoria tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal by Jared Dmytriw at 17:06 of the first. Ryan Peckford and Jack Walker had the assists.
Seattle outshot Victoria 9-7 in the first period.
The Royals went in front 2-1 at 5:21 of the second period on a goal from Matthew Campese. Tyler Soy sent Campese had the only assist.
The T-Birds came right back and tied the game 2-2 at 8:32 of the second. Kolesar worked the puck out of the right corner and towards the Victoria net. Kolesar crossed the puck to Pederson to the left of the net. Pederson roofed the puck over Smith as he slid across the crease to try and make the save.
Pederson and Kolesar hooked up at 12:56 to give the T-Birds a 3-2 lead. Pederson was to the left of the Victoria net and backhanded the puck through the crease to Kolesar. Kolesar caught the pass and beat Smith high as he slid through the crease to try and make the save.
Matthew Wedman put the T-Birds in front 4-2 at 15:05 of the second. Adam Henry took a slap shot from the left point that rebounded to Luke Osterman who took a shot. The puck then came to Wedman to the left of the goal. Wedman beat Smith from a sharp angle for the goal.
The T-Birds outshot the Royals 16-7 in the second period and led 25-15 in shots after two periods.
The Royals cut the lead to one goal at 5:51 when Mitch Skapski scored a power-play goal on a scramble in front of Seattle goalie Danny Mumaugh. Kristian Ferletak and Jake Kohlhauser had the assists.
Victoria tied the game 4-4 at 7:41 on a goal from Brandon Fushimi. Matthew Phillips had the only assist.
Victoria outshot Seattle 15-12 in the third period but Seattle led in shots after regulation 37-30.
Mumaugh made 29 saves on 33 shots to get the win.
Smith stopped 35 of 40 shots in the loss.
Seattle outshot Victoria 40-33 in the game.
