The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 Wednesday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
The game was the first game of a home-and-home series between the two teams. They meet again on Friday at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
Drayson Bowman, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Roman had goals in the first period for the Chiefs.
Seattle (27-29-1-3) got on the board at 15:30 of the first on the 15th goal of the year from Jeremy Boyer. Brenden Silvester sent the puck to Brad Haber at the left point. Haber put a slap shot on goal with Boyer standing in front of Spokane goalie Dustin Tokarski. Boyer tipped Haber’s shot past the Chiefs goalie.
Seattle outshot Spokane 9-6 in the first period.
Spokane (39-16-0-3) struck for four goals in the second period. Bowman and Johnson each scored twice in the second period.
The Chiefs outshot the T-Birds 12-4 in the second period and led 18-13 in total shots after two periods.
Boyer scored a second goal at 4:49 of the third period to get the T-Birds second goal. Brenden Dillon carried the puck down the left side into the Chiefs zone. He crossed the puck across the high slot to Greg Scott. Scott one-timed Dillon’s pass and the shot hit the cross bar and dropped into the crease. Boyer was in front of the Chiefs nets to poke the loose puck into the net.
Thomas Hickey scored the T-Birds third goal on a slap shot from just inside the blue line. Stefan Warg fed Hickey the puck from the left side and Hickey one- timed the pass past Tokarski at 5:20 of the period. It was Hickey’s 15th goal of the year.
Seattle outshot Spokane 24-22 in the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 17 saves on 24 shots and his record falls to 16-13-1-3.
Tokarski made 19 saves on 22 shots and his records is now 29-11-0-2.
