The Seattle Thunderbirds signed defenseman Sahvan Khaira to a WHL contract, general manager Russ Farwell announced today.

The 6-foot-1, 211-pound Khaira played for the Okanagan Hockey Academy last season. He had two goals and 20 assists for 22 points in 28 games with 44 penalty minutes.

“I am very excited. This is the biggest thing in my hockey career,” Khaira said. “I was at Game 1 of the playoffs against Everett and I loved the atmosphere and the crowd was really into it. It felt like I belonged. I am looking forward to doing whatever I can to help the team this coming season.”

The T-Birds selected Khaira in the ninth round, 181st overall, in the 2013 Bantam Draft.

“We are excited to add Sahvan to our team for next year,” Farwell said. “He has huge potential because of his combination of skill and great size and he is excited to get started on the next step in his career. We are looking forward to watching him develop with our team.”

Jujhar Khaira, Sahvan’s older brother, played for the Everett Silvertips last season. Jujhar was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round, 61st overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The T-Birds home opener is Sept. 20 against Everett. The T-Birds release the 2014-15 regular-season schedule Wednesday.

Season tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling the office at 253-239-7825.
