The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Prince George Cougars 3-2 Friday afternoon in their first game at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament at Comcast Arena in Everett.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Brennan Tutt at 10:17 of the first period. Sena Acolatse took a slap shot from the left point that deflected off a Cougars defender to Jonathan Parker in the left circle. Prince George goalie James Priestner reacted to the deflection as Parker centered the puck to Tutt in front of the Prince George net. Tutt slammed the puck past a sprawling Priestner for his first preseason goal.
Prince George led in shots 17-10 after the first period.
Seattle took a 2-0 lead at 8:11 of the second period on a goal mouth scramble goal by Mitch Elliott. Tyler Alos brought the puck out of the corner and got a shot on goal. Elliott was able to sneak the puck past Priestner at the right post for the goal. Jake Doty had the second assist on the goal.
Seattle went up 3-0 on at 11:00 of the second on a nice goal from the line of Parker, Acolatse and Colin Jacobs. Acolatse carried the puck down the right wing and when he was behind the Cougars net he backhanded the puck to Jacobs in the right corner. Jacobs quickly sent the puck to Parker all alone in front of the Prince George net. Parker beat Priestner on the blocker side for the goal.
Kyle Jahraus replaced Jacob DeSerres in net for Seattle after Seattle’s third goal. DeSerres stopped all 23 shots he faced.
Caleb Belter scored at 16:50 of the second to get Prince George on the board. Parker Stanfield and Daniel Medland-Marchen had the assists.
Prince George led in shots 31-17 after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 31-17 in the second period.
James Dobrowolski scored for the Cougars at 7:59 of the third period to cut the T-Birds lead to one goal.
The Cougars outshot the T-Birds 37-22 in the game.
Jahraus stopped 12 of 14 shots.
Priestner made 19 saves on 22 shots.
The T-Birds will open the 2009-10 Western Hockey League regular season with back-to-back home games against the Silvertips on Sept. 18, at 7:35 p.m. and the Portland Winterhawks on Sept. 19, at 7:05 p.m. Both games are at ShoWare Center in Kent.
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
