The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Jan. 8 in front of 10,288 at the Rose Garden in Portland.

The T-Birds were down 2-0 late in the third period when Travis Toomey scored a power-play goal to cut the Winterhawks lead to one goal. Seattle pulled goalie Calvin Pickard with just over a minute and a half in the game to try and tie the game. They got several good shots on goal but were not able to get the puck past Portland goalie Mac Carruth.

The goal by Toomey was his fourth in the last three games and extended his goal streak to three games, the longest by a T-Bird this season.

The T-Birds finish out the weekend against the Chilliwack Bruins on Sunday at 5:05pm at Prospera Centre.

Portland went in front 1-0 on a power-play goal by Craig Cunningham at 17:11 of the first period. Brad Ross and Oliver Gabriel had the assists.

The Winterhawks outshot the T-Birds 13-8 in the first period.

Sven Bartschi gave the Winterhawks a 2-0 lead at 11:25 of the second period with his 22nd goal of the year. Ryan Johansen and Ty Rattie assisted on the goal.

Portland (26-12-0-3) led in shots, 29-16, after two periods.

Seattle (17-16-3-4) cut the Winterhawks lead to one at 14:50 of the third period with a power-play goal. Toomey redirected a Travis Bobbee point shot past Carruth. Bobbee took a slap shot for the right point as Toomey slid in from the left of Carruth to tip the shot. Charles Wells had the second assist on the goal.

Portland outshot Seattle 15-13 in the third period and 44-29 in the game.

Pickard stopped 42 of 44 shots and his record is now 17-14-2-4.

Carruth made 28 saves on 29 shots and his record is now 17-9-0-1.
