Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell on Jan. 10 announced the T-Birds have acquired defenseman Ryan Button from the Prince Albert Raiders for center Charles Wells and the T-Birds’ first-round selection in the 2011 CHL Import Draft.
“We are excited to add Ryan Button to our team right now as we are in a race for the playoffs,” said Farwell. “Our blue line was a key area we had hoped to improve. Ryan is an experienced defenseman that will also help us offensively.”
Button is a 19-year-old from Edmonton currently in his fourth season in the WHL. Button, at 6’1 and 190-pounds, has appeared in 44 games for the Raiders this season and has 23 points on three goals and 20 assists with 31 penalty minutes. In four seasons with the Raiders Button has appeared in 240 career games and has 101 points on 14 goals and 87 points with 150 penalty minutes.
Button was selected by the Boston Bruins in the third round, 86th overall, in the 2009 NHL Draft. He was selected by the Raiders in the second round, 25th overall, in the 2006 Bantam Draft.
Wells has played in 41 games this season for the T-Birds and has 27 points on 11 goals and 16 assists with 21 penalty minutes.
