The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Friday night at Comcast Arena in Everett.
The T-Birds are in fourth place in the Western Conference playoff standings, nine points behind the Victoria and five points ahead of Spokane.
The T-Birds take on the Kamloops Blazers at 6:05 p.m. today at the ShoWare Center. It’s the T-Birds annual Hockey Challenge game to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska. There will be seven games, including the T-Birds vs. Blazers, capped by the Celebrity T-Birds Alumni All-Star Game after the T-Birds game.
Everett (29-23-7-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Dawson Leedahl at 1:41of the first period. Mirco Mueller moved the puck quickly up to Leedahl in the neutral zone catching the T-Birds on a bad line change. Leedahl came down the left wing with a defenseman chasing him from the bench to cut down his angle. Leedahl beat Seattle goalie Taran Kozun over the glove for the goal.
Everett outshot Seattle 9-5 in the first period.
The Silvertips took a 2-0 lead at 10:45 of the third period on a goal from Mirco Mueller. Mueller took a wrist shot from along the boards on the left side with traffic in front of Kozun. The puck found its way past the screened Seattle goalie. Kevin Davis and Manraj Hayer had the assists.
Seattle (37-19-2-3) put on a comeback late in the third period with Kozun pulled for an extra attacker. Adam Henry took a slap shot from the right point that Justin Hickman tipped past Everett goalie Austin Lotz with 1:03left in the game. Shea Theodore had the second assist as he made a cross ice pass from the left point to Henry at the right point.
The T-Birds got the puck back in Everett’s zone and pulled Kozun a second time. They were pressuring Everett for the tying goal but the Silvertips were able to keep the puck out of their net.
Everett outshot Seattle 28-18 in the game.
Kozun made 26 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 16-23-2-1.
Lotz stopped 17 of 18 shots and his record is now 21-18-3-1.
