Tri-City takes down Seattle 5-4 in shootout

The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 in a shootout Nov. 24 at ShoWare Center.

Adam Hughesman was the only shooter to score in the shootout to give the Americans the win. Colin Jacobs and Marcel Noebels were stopped by Tri-City goalie Drew Owsley and Burke Gallimore shot wide. Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped Patrick Holland.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead at 5:38 of the first period on the ninth goal of the season from Jacobs. Travis Bobbee took a slap shot from the right point with Tyler Alos in front of Owsley. Alos tipped Bobbee’s shot on net and Owsley redirected the puck to the left circle and right to Jacobs. Jacobs snapped the puck past a lunging Owsley to give the T-Birds the lead.

Tri-City (13-9-1-1) outshot Seattle 19-9 in the first period.

The T-Birds took a 2-0 lead at 3:17 of the second period on Jacobs second goal of the night. Mitch Elliot threw the puck at Owsley from the left corner. Owsley stopped the puck but it was against the outside of the post. Alos poked the puck into the crease. Jacobs came from the right and lifted the loose puck over a sprawling Owsley.

Bobbee extended the T-Birds lead to 3-0 at 12:31 of the second with a power-play goal. Travis Toomey worked the puck up the left side of the ice to Charles Wells. Wells brought the puck into the Americans zone with Bobbee skating hard down the slot. Wells hesitated and made a no-look pass to Bobbee who had his stick on the ice. Tri-City got on the board at 16:24 of the second period on a power-play goal from Connor Rankin. Brendan Shinnimin and Hughesman had the assists.

Seattle (10-5-3-4) outshot Tri-City 17-15 in the second period but the Americans led, 34-26, in total shots after 40 minutes.

Shinnimin scored a power-play goal at 1:07 of the third period to cut the T-Birds lead to one goal. Brock Sutherland and Kruise Reddick had the assists.

Brendan Rouse put the T-Birds back in front by two goals at 13:52 of the third. Gallimore played the puck off the glass to send Rouse on a breakaway. Rouse faked to his backhand, brought the puck to his forehand and beat Owsley high for his fourth goal of the season. Erik Bonsor had the second assist on the goal.

Tri-City scored two goals in 38 seconds with the goalie pulled to tie the game. Reddick scored at 17:23 and Jordan Messier scored at 18:01. Hughesman had the assist on Reddick’s goal and Neal Prokop and Patrick Holland had the assists on Messier’s goal.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 21-17 in the third period and 4-3 in overtime.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 55 saves on 55 shots and his record is now 10-5-2-4.

Owsley stopped 42 of 46 shots and his record is now 10-8-0-1.
