The Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 Friday night at ShoWare Center in Kent.
The T-Birds now embark on a six-game road trip to the Central Division. They will face the Calgary Hitmen on Oct. 25, in a game that has a special start time of 1 p.m.
Seattle will also travel to Red Deer on Oct. 27, Edmonton on Oct. 28, Lethbridge on Oct. 30, Medicine Hat on Oct. 31 and Kootenay on Nov. 1. Their next home game is Nov. 6, against the Spokane Chiefs at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
Brandon (7-6-0-1) scored the first two goals of the night via the power play.
Matt Calvert connected with his seventh goal of the season at 10:54 of the first period to give the Wheat Kings an early 1-0 lead. Scott Glennie and Brayden Schenn earned assists on the play.
Mark Schneider gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead at 18:03 of the first period with his third goal of the season. Schneider was assisted by Calvert and Darren Bestland.
The T-Birds outshot the Wheat Kings in the first period, 9-8.
Brandon made it 3-0 at 1:53 of the second period on a goal by Aaron Lewadniuk. Lewadniuk was assisted by Jay Fehr.
Seattle (3-8-0-1) cut into Brandon’s lead with a power-play goal 4:57 into the second period. Jonathan Parker won the draw in the left circle. The puck came free to Tyler Alos who fed the puck to Sena Acolatse at the left point. Acolatse fired a slap shot under former T-Bird goalie Jacob DeSerres’ blockers to make it 3-1.
DeSerres was traded to the Wheat Kings by the T-Birds on Oct. 22 for center Brandon Rouse.
The T-Birds outshot the Wheat Kings 14-11 in the second period and led 23-19 in total shots after 40 minutes.
Calvert added his second goal of the night with an empty netter at 19:00 to secure the victory for the Wheat Kings. Glennie and Schenn had assists on the goal.
The Wheat Kings outshot the T-Birds 8-6 in the final period of play but the T-Birds finished with a 29-27 total advantage.
T-Bird goalie Calvin Pickard made 23 saves on 26 shots and his record is now 3-5-0-1 on the season.
DeSerres earned his first victory of the year while stopping 28 of 29 shots. His record improves to 1-3-0-0.
