The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 in a shootout Nov. 7 at the Rose Garden.
The game was tied 3-3 after 65 minutes of action to send the game to the shootout.
Portland’s Colin Reddin shot first in the shootout and was denied by Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard. Seattle’s Jonathan Parker was the first T-Bird shooter and he beat Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha with a backhand shot.
Jacob Berglund shot second for Portland and he beat Pickard with a forehand move. Sena Acolatse was the T-Birds second shooter and he was denied by Mucha.
Chris Francis was the Winterhawks third shooter and he beat Pickard with a shot over the blocker. Charles Wells was the T-Birds third shooter and had to score to send the shootout to sudden death. Mucha made the save to give the Winterhawks a 2-1 win in the shootout and a 4-3 win in the game.
Both teams had 10 shots on goal in a scoreless first period.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead at 5:55 of the second period on a goal by Brad Haber. Jeremy Schappert got to a loose puck in the Seattle zone and headed up ice. Schappert passed the puck to Parker in the neutral zone on the right side. Parker quickly crossed the puck to Haber who carried it into the Portland zone. Haber put a snap shot on goal from the top of the face- off circle that beat Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha on the blocker side.
Portland (13-8-0-0) tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Chris Francis at 11:13 of the second. Joe Morrow and Luke Walker had the assists.
The T-Birds went back in front at 13:32 of the second on a power-play goal by Acolatse. Brendan Rouse got the puck to Colin Jacobs just inside the blue line in the Portland zone. Jacobs carried the puck towards the right circle. Jacobs fed the puck back to Acolatse in the high slot. Acolatse one-timed Jacobs pass and beat Mucha on the blocker side for his fourth goal of the year.
Seattle (4-12-1-3) went ahead 3-1 at 15:46 of the third on a goal by Schappert. Lindsay Nielsen got the puck to Schappert who carried it up ice. Schappert passed the puck to his right to Prab Rai. Rai brought the puck into the Portland zone with Nielsen charging towards the net. Rai cut quickly towards center ice and then made cross-slot pass to Schappert trailing the play. Schappert put a hard wrist shot on goal that hit Mucha’s glove and went into the net.
The Winterhawks led 25-18 in total shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 15-8 in the second period.
Francis scored a power-play goal at 7:18 of the third period to cut the T-Birds lead to one goal. Walker and Nino Niederreiter had the assists on the goal.
The Winterhawks tied the game 3-3 in the last second of the third period on a goal by Francis. Spencer Bennett assisted on the goal.
Portland outshot Seattle 20-13 in the third period.
The Winterhawks outshot the T-Birds 48-32 in the game.
Pickard made 44 saves on 48 shots and his record is now 3-8-1-3.
Mucha is now 8-5-0-0 after stopping 29 of 32 shots.
